Ensure a Smooth Moving Day

Moving is an adventure, but the moving process itself can be a very overwhelming experience. Whether you are relocating across town or across country, packing up your belongings and loading everything you own into a moving van isn’t easy. However, with some time and organization, you will be amazed how much smoother the transition can be.

Start Early and Create a Timeline

The most important thing you can do is start the moving process earlier than you think you need to. Create a detailed moving timeline working backward from your move date. Assign specific tasks to specific weeks: research and book movers or truck rental, collect packing supplies, begin packing non-essentials, notify important parties of your address change, transfer utilities, and arrange for childcare and pet care on moving day.

Declutter Before You Pack

There is no point moving items you don’t want or need. Before you begin packing, go through every room and categorize items into keep, donate, sell, and discard. The less you move, the lower your moving costs and the easier your unpacking will be. Host a garage sale or use online marketplaces to sell items you no longer need.

Pack Strategically

Pack room by room and label every box clearly with its contents and destination room. Pack heavy items in small boxes and lighter items in larger boxes. Keep a “first night” box with everything you’ll need immediately: bedding, toiletries, a change of clothes, phone chargers, snacks, and any important documents. Load this box last so it’s first off the truck.

Hire Reputable Movers

If using professional movers, get at least three quotes, check reviews, verify licensing and insurance, and get everything in writing. Understand what is and isn’t covered by their liability, and consider purchasing additional moving insurance for high-value items.

Plan for the Unexpected

Delays happen. Elevators break, traffic occurs, weather interferes. Build buffer time into your moving day schedule and have contingency plans in place. Have a contact number for the building manager at your new home, confirm elevator reservations, and keep important documents and valuables with you rather than in the moving truck.
